Healing Takes Time

March 31, 2026by Debra Scoresby Palmer

Healing takes time… sometimes a whole lot longer than anticipated.

Dr. Graham told us that Tony would feel 80% better two months after treatments ended for the Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma (DLBCL) he battled last year, and that getting to 100% would take longer.

I asked Tony how he is feeling based on what the doctor said, and he agreed that he is not yet at 100%. He can feel himself getting stronger, and tasks that have been difficult are getting easier. It has been a year since he stopped working out, and he still hasn't resumed a consistent gym routine. We have a follow-up appointment with Dr. Graham in less than a month.

I checked the area under Tony's chin that has given him trouble since the near-total glossectomy surgery he had in 2017, and after nine years, it has completely healed. He is disappointed that the scar is so deep, because he has worked hard packing it daily, trying to get it to be flush with the surrounding flesh. Fortunately, it's hidden underneath his chin and not noticeable.

After two kidney stone surgeries a month apart, in December and January, and wearing a stent for over a month, healing for me was ridiculously slow. The PA who removed the stent really over-sold how quickly I would recover. He said some patients feel better right away, and some feel better within a few hours. My body was so inflamed and angry that it took into the third week before I felt normal again and was able to run up and down the stairs or walk the dog without feeling like the stent was still in there.

Just as I was finding my groove, I came down with a cold virus that took me three weeks to shake. It started in the sinuses with nagging headaches, moved into the chest, included conjunctivitis and losing my voice for several days, and culminated in a persistent and violent dry cough that made sleeping nearly impossible. I don't get sick often… when I do, it's memorable. I have so much gratitude for good health!

Thankfully, we were all healthy for the two weeks Will had his children for Spring break. We enjoyed our time together, which included a day trip to SLC and the Loveland Aquarium, Easter dresses for Palm Sunday, and celebrating upcoming birthdays.

We are grateful that Will's house went under contract just a few days after listing. We worked our tails off getting it ready for closing. The kids were involved, and although it was admittedly painful, it seemed to help them move forward. I "dry cleaned" the carpets (no chemicals), double mopped the garage floor, and cleaned out the commercial garbage can. (You're welcome, new owners!)

Will was told that based on the length of the marriage and what he went through, it will take seven years to recover, so there is still a lot of healing going on. ❤️‍🩹 I can't imagine what it takes to process that kind of betrayal. We are so proud of Will and in awe of what a great dad he is.

We keep relying on the Lord in the midst of constant activity and change. We move our daughter Jacque to the Boise area this weekend as she begins an internship at GoGo SqueeZ!

Going through something hard? Give your family one place to follow along.

Telling hard news again on every call and every text wears you out. That's why we made this blog: one place for Tony's story, updates by email, and a simple way for friends to help. I built it with HBA's Funnel Builder by typing what I wanted in plain words. If your family is walking through something hard, you can have a place like this too.
